Diesel Repair
Details
Built with durability, reliability, and optimization in mind, diesel engine systems are designed to use their own compression to ignite fuel. In gasoline engines, the fuel is mixed with air, compressed by pistons, and ignited by a spark plug.
The rate of compression in a diesel engine is more than three times that of a regular gasoline engine system. In a diesel engine system, the air is compressed at a high compression ratio, which introduces a great amount of heat. Following this compression, fuel is directly injected into the cylinder, where the fuel vapor is ignited.
Glow plugs have two heating elements that allow them to get very hot very quickly for fast starts. Turbochargers increase the compression ignition by quickly compressing the air flowing into the engine, allowing for more air to flow into the chamber. More air in the combustion chamber means more fuel can be added to the combustion process. Turbochargers provide diesel engine systems with improved efficiency, and ultimately, more miles per gallon of diesel fuel.
Your diesel engine plays a major role in your vehicle, so it is especially important that you be aware of problems and seek repairs immediately. Because diesel engines make a considerable amount of noise during normal, everyday operation, diagnosing diesel engine problems can be hard to do if you are listening in on the engine.
However, there are a number of symptoms you can watch out for that indicate your diesel engine needs maintenance. A diesel engine running at lower RPMs or a hard-to-start engine are signs of low fuel pressure, but these signs may also be symptoms of an insufficient fuel supply or poor fuel quality. Allowing our team to troubleshoot your diesel engine can help ensure that the proper repair procedures are followed to repair the engine. Every diesel engine manufacturer requires different preventive maintenance procedures, so referring to your owner’s manual will help in planning and scheduling routine maintenance services.
Keeping all diesel engine components—glow plugs, fuel injectors, and turbochargers—in proper working order will increase the life of your diesel engine system while promoting overall vehicle maintenance.

Diesel Particulate Filters
Details
Diesel Particulate Filters, or “DPFs” have been in use here since 2007 when introduced by the EPA to help diesel-engine equipped vehicles comply with stringent emission regulations. DPFs greatly reduce the soot and ash that was previously prevalent in diesel exhaust, and when used with EGR they can eliminate the familiar diesel smell. Combined with urea injection, the exhaust is so clean that contaminants can’t be measured.
However, they require maintenance, and a lack of this maintenance can result in stranded drivers, missed deliveries and unscheduled downtime. Because they are a complex unit, they are expensive to replace, so it’s best to rely on a regular maintenance schedule OR the vehicle’s sensors to let the operator know when to do an active or passive regeneration (soot cleansing). If a driver ignores the engine sensors call for an active regen, the truck engine controls will cut engine power, and eventually shut it down.
Weighing nearly 100 pounds, the DPF can be serviced if the correct equipment is used. If the unit is inspected and damage is found, it must be replaced with a new or remanufactured unit. Damage can occur from road shock, excessive heat, or by dropping the unit once removed. A damaged unit has no value, and must be replaced. Since new units can cost several thousands of dollars, it’s imperative to keep your DPF clean and in good service for as long as possible.
We at Quality Car Care are familiar and skilled at working with your DPF. We take pride in the work we do here in Andover to keep your diesel on the road and producing income for you. If you suspect your DPF needs service, or would like us to inspect it for you, give us a call at (316) 248-2065 and we’ll set up an appointment.
Glow Plug Replacement
Details
Glow plugs are pencil-shaped objects that help diesel engines start. In essence, they serve as the diesel equivalent to spark plugs found in gasoline engines. Unlike spark plugs, glow plugs use heat to get the engine going. In cold weather, glow plugs play an especially important role. This is because diesel engines often experience ignition troubles when temperatures are low. Diesel engines require the air to reach a certain temperature for fuel ignition to occur, but they tend to absorb heat when they are cold. Glow plugs help solve this problem by providing enough heat for the fuel to ignite. However, glow plugs usually require a small amount of time to warm up before they can perform. While they gather heat, glow plugs let off a small light or glow. As a result, this process is often referred to as “glowing.” After the glow plugs finish warming, drivers should be able to successfully start their diesel vehicles.
Without a functioning glow plug, a diesel engine will have trouble igniting fuel in the combustion chamber. Over time, your glow plugs will wear out and need to be replaced. Faulty glow plugs may fail to ignite the fuel in your engine, and they can lead to idling and unwelcome smoke emissions. If your glow plugs are acting up, bring your vehicle to us and our service staff will replace the bad glow plugs. Signs of bad glow plugs include hard starting, rough idling, a misfiring engine, or white smoke. When these symptoms occur, allow our service staff to inspect your glow plugs and install replacements. Our knowledgeable staff is equipped with the right tools for the job, and we are eager to help.
